What is the most meaningful Christmas pastime to you and why?
Christmas doesn’t have to be all about gift giving and gift receiving, or maybe it is. Share with us what your most meaningful, memorable, or favorite Christmas pastime is and tell us why.
For me, Christmas boils down to sharing good cheer. More specifically, it boils down to Christmas Eve with my family. My mother spends weeks preparing for what seems to be a night at St. Nicholas’ home. She cooks quite the spread, packages the house like a Winter Wonderland, equipped with a choo-choo train underneath the tree, and prepares gifts for all the children of family and friends. I normally prepare a game or two, along with a song or 10. My sister is the elf, helping in any area she can, such as decorating, wrapping, and baking. On the night of, my dad disappears at some point in the night and reappears as Santa Clause, red gift-sack at hand. One by one, everyone – men, women, children, and my cat – sits on his lap and gets to share anything they’d like with Santa, most of the time consisting of giggles and a highlight of their year or something meaningful to them. The highlight of the evening is always seeing the children’s faces when Santa walks through the door – they’re colored with a miracle and belief that anything can happen!
This tradition at my house has been ongoing for as long as I can remember, and it’s the time of the year that reminds me to share the gift of love, laughter, light, warmth, gratitude, and generosity with friends, family, as well as strangers, not just at Christmas but at all times.
