Through the years of practice in our Northern California Ayurveda Clinic, we have recognized that eating in a conscious manner is integral to achieve a level of optimum health.

A properly functioning digestive system is crucial to having a healthy body. Since every single cell within our bodies is made up of the food which we have ingested, the health of those individual cells is dependent upon our digestion. Therefore, it is important to eat healthy food to begin with and to set up the conditions to facilitate the digestive process.

Only eat when hungry.
This may sound obvious, but we often eat due to our emotions–anger, stress, sadness, or boredom.

Focus on the food.
Do not watch TV, do not read, do not work on the computer, do not drive your car and do not talk excessively while eating. If we are doing other things while we are eating, then our energy is not in our abdominal area, but up and out and not able to help with digestion. Doing two things at once is also dividing to the mind. Then we are in our heads and not in our bodies. It becomes difficult to know when to stop eating. It could be those one or two bites too many which could affect digestion.

Always eat sitting down.
Apana vata, the downward moving vata located in the lower abdomen is disturbed if we eat standing, moving, or if we get up in the middle of the meal. It will then flow upward and blow out our digestive fire.

Avoid cold food and drinks with meals.
We want a sharp digestive fire to burn our food. Putting cold foods into our bodies will dampen or put our the digestive fire.

Have some warm water or ginger tea with your meals.
There is a proper balance of having enough liquid with our meals and having taken too much liquid with our meals. If the food you are eating is dry or dense, you will need more fluid with your food. Drinking ginger tea with meals aids digestion.

Lunch should be the main meal of the day.
The digestive fire is at it’s highest between noon and 1pm. We will more easily digest our food at this time. If you feel sluggish after a big lunch, it may be because you ate too much or ate heavy food and aggravated kapha.

Spirit-in-Nature essences were inspired by the internationally acclaimed metaphysician, Paramhansa Yogananda. Research, case histories, and testimonials have backed these findings since 1977, making them the oldest flower essence line outside the UK. These flower essences are based on the psychological qualities of 20 different fruit and vegetable blossoms.

Yogananda explained that the most pure foods (including flowers of plants like grapes, pear, apple, lettuce, etc.)  has sattwic, or elevating energy; versus lower energy vibration food like processed food, red meat, or ice cream.

Every food we eat creates a unique vibration of energy that has a different effect on the body, mind, and soul.

kitchen-tea-150x150The ayurvedic daily routine is based on the principle that we can achieve a state of inner balance and harmony when we live in balance and harmony with nature.

The quality of our life is greatly affected by our health, and our health is affected by not only what is going on within us, but all around us.

By following an ayurvedic daily routine, one naturally falls in tune with the rhythms and energies of the day, and can achieve a state of harmony and balance physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually.

What are the doshas?

The ayurvedic daily routine is governed by the three doshas discovered by the ancient rishis (knowers) of India where ayurveda (the science of life) first originated. Doshas (mind-body constitution or personality) make up the energetic constitutions within us, and govern the natural rhythms of nature outside of us.

The doshas are made up of the 5 master elements (space, air, water, and earth) that make up everything within and outside of our bodies.

There are three known types of doshas: pittavata, and kapha. Each of these doshas has a different constitution of the 5 elements, that we see in ourselves as a quality of mind-body.

We see the doshas around us governing different rhythms or qualities of the day. These times of day are the rhythms that make up the foundation of the ayurvedic daily routine. During the time of day of a dosha, the qualities of that dosha are more dominant. When our daily routines align with the energetic rhythms of nature, our energy becomes balanced within by living harmoniously.

ayurvedic daily routine, what is a dosha, three doshas, ayurveda dosha times of dayAyurvedic Daily Rhythms: Doshic Times of Day

The ayurvedic daily routine provides the greatest advantages and support of nature energetically.

Vata dosha is composed  of air and space elements. Its qualities are cold, rough, It governs the time period from 2 to 6 (2am to 6am and 2pm to 6pm).

Pitta dosha is composed mostly of fire element with some water element. Its qualities are hot, moist, slightly oily, acidic, tense, sharp and light. It governs the time from 10 to 2 (10am to 2pm and 10pm to 2am).

Kapha dosha is composed of the elements earth and water. It governs qualities like sluggish, slow, oily, smooth. It governs the time from 6 to 10 (6am to 10am and 6pm to 10pm).

Ayurvedic Daily Routine:

  1. (6am) Wake up close to sunrise, close to the Vata time of day (movement and freshness). If you wake up too late, you will be getting up well into kapha time (sluggish and slow).
  2. Oil pull with sesame oil for 15 to 20 minutes (or until the oil becomes a whitish color). (Learn about oil pulling.) This helps to begin the bodies’ cleansing and purification process for the day.
  3. Tongue scrape. Using a tongue scraper, remove the layer of white film on the surface of the tongue which are toxins (ama) built up from the night’s healing process. This also assists the body’s cleansing.
  4. Have a cup of hot water to assist with daily elimination. Have an herbal tea or ginger tea to assist like Shaktiveda Cleanse Within.
  5. Self-oil massage and warm shower. (Learn “Self-Abhy” the self-oil massage)
  6. (7am) Practice yoga and/or meditation. (Learn to meditate)
  7. (8am) Journaling or light reading
  8. (8:30am) Have a light breakfast fruit, hot rice cereal or warm smoothie.
  9. (9am) Work or perform usual activities. The pitta time for activity and accomplishing things is high at this time.
  10. (12:30pm) Lunch should be during the pitta time of day when agni (digestive fire) is best. This should be the main meal of the day with the largest amount of food, main protein and fat source.
  11. (5pm) After the day’s activity, transition into a more quiet nature by having a soothing cup of tea, or practicing meditation or yoga. These will be balancing to vata dosha which when out of balance feels stress.
  12. (6:30pm) Warm, well-cooked and light dinner for kapha time of the day. Best before 7pm to be at least three hours before going to bed.
  13. (8pm) Unwind from the day. Perform quiet activities like baths, reading, restorative yoga poses, or have a soothing cup of Calm Within tea. Avoid watching TV or being talkative or doing activating things that will wind you up again.
  14. (10pm) Bedtime. Early enough to allow time for processing of emotions and the day. Also, if you stay up too late, you enter into the Pitta time of night, which is likely to waken you back up or disrupt sleep later in the night.

ayurveda-six-tastes-what-foods-300x243Our body has inherent knowledge for recognizing what food groups and nutrients we have consumed, and what it needs to be properly satisfied. It uses the six tastes to know if we have gotten the variety needed to achieve perfect health.

The body’s craving of certain foods are usually in response to doshic imbalances, in efforts to seek harmony again. When we consume all 6 tastes at meals, we feel nurtured, and are less likely to be out of balance and overconsume at the next meal in efforts to get the variety of nutrients the body needs.

All food can be categorized into these six tastes. And each taste has a particular influence on the three doshas or mind-body constitutions that affect our ability to be in a state of perfect health and balance.  Thus, the food we eat, and the tastes they have, affect one or more of our doshas, with each dosha balanced by three tastes.

It is ideal to have all six tastes at your lunch and dinner meals, but especially at lunch because it should be the main meal of the day.

What are the Six Tastes of Ayurveda?

  • Sweet
  • Salty
  • Sour
  • Bitter
  • Pungent
  • Astringent

How the 6 different tastes of ayurveda can affect you:

Ayurveda Taste: Sweet

  • Elements: Earth + Water
  • Common sources of the sweet taste in our daily diet include all sweet foods like grains (pasta, rice, bread), oils, cow milk, fatty meats, starchy vegetables (carrots), dates, and sweeteners.
  • It is balancing to the vata and pitta doshas. Excessive intake imbalances kapha dosha.
  • Sweet is deeply nutritive and building (for the cells and systems, living tissues, and fluids). It is the most grounding and nourishing.
  • Its qualities are heavy, oily, and moist — which slow digestion.

Ayurveda Taste: Salty

  • Elements: Water + Fire
  • Common sources include table salt, sea vegetables, salty meats, processed foods (chips, pretzels), black olives, cheese, tamari, and soy sauce.
  • It is balancing to vata, with excess imbalancing kapha and pitta. Salt is grounding and moistening, and heating. Salt stimulates digestion, helps maintain proper electrolyte balance, and has mildly laxative effects.

Ayurveda Taste: Sour

  • Elements: Earth + Fire
  • Common sources include citrus fruits (lemons, limes, sour oranges, grapefruit) berries, tomatoes, vinegar, and fermented or pickled foods (cheese, yogurt, alcohol).
  • It is balancing to vata, with excess imbalancing kapha and pitta. It is used to enhance digestive fire, stimulating appetite and saliva production.
  • Its qualities are light, heating and oily.

Ayurveda Taste: Bitter

  • Elements: Space + Air
  • Common sources includes all green leafy vegetables, and especially dark green leafy vegetables, beets, dandelion root, tumeric, and fenugreek.
  • It is balancing to kapha and pitta, excess may cause vata imbalance, especially raw vegetables.
  • Bitter is the coolest and lightest of all six tastes. Its comprised of air and ether. It is best in small amounts, to enhance flavor, and help to gently purify and cleanse the body.

Ayurveda Taste: Pungent

  • Elements: Fire + Air
  • Common sources include hot and spicy foods like peppers, chilies, garlic, also ginger, onions, and radishes, mustard.
  • Balances kapha dosha, but excess irritates vata and pitta. It creates increased elimination and improves appetite.
  • Its qualities are light and dry, and hot.

Ayurveda Taste: Astringent

  • Elements: Air + Earth
  • Common sources include beans and legumes (lentils, mung), green apples and grapes, cabbage, poultry, potatoes, tea, unripe bananas, cranberries, pomegranates, alfalfa sprouts, green beans, and okra.
  • Balances kapha and pitta doshas, excess imbalances vata.
  • Its qualities are cool, dry and light, firm (makes your mouth pucker and feel dry). Slows down digestion.

Emphasize the tastes you need to be in balance with your doshas. Here is a sample meal with all 6 tastes for balancing pitta dosha:

  • Grains (sweet), green vegetables, (bitter) beans or poultry (astringent), little bit of hot/spicy (pungent), little bit of salt (salty), and little bit of sour (sour). Meal: Kitchari with white rice (sweet) and red lentils (astringent), added Himalayan salt (salty), squeeze of lemon juice (pungent), chard (bitter), and black or cayenne pepper (pungent) and cilantro (bitter) to taste.

When you have all 6 tastes at your meal, you will leave the table feeling satisfied and nurtured. In the long run, you will overeat less, and your body will be able to digest food properly at the right amounts, leading to a naturally balanced weight and reducedama or toxins.

ayurveda-meaning-science-of-life-the-three-doshas-300x168What are the 3 Doshas of Ayurveda?

The three doshas were first discovered by the ancient rishis (knowers) of India whereayurveda (the science of life) originated thousands of years ago. The doshas make up the energetic constitutions within us and all around us.

Relative to our health, the three doshas govern our physical and mental processes, making up the individual constitutions of body and mind often seen as patterns common in human nature. For example, a vata type person is usually quick, thin, and creative or expansive. A pitta person may have a fiery personality and determination. A kapha person may be sturdy and kind.

When we are in tune with them, the inherent intelligence of the doshas a life force can guide us toward a natural state of perfect health and fulfillment. When we achieve balance amongst the three doshas, we are free to live a life in joy by allowing the flow of consciousness and light to travel freely throughout our being.

Elements of Nature and the Doshas:

The doshas are made up of the 5 master elements (space, air, water, and earth) that make up everything within and around us.

There are 3 known types of doshas: pittavata, and kapha. Each of these doshas has a different constitution of the 5 elements, making up a distinct quality that is exhibited in the mind and body, and reflected in the properties of nature.

Vata Dosha:

  • Composed of air and space elements.
  • Qualities are cold and rough.
  • Controls the direction of energy (the flow) throughout the body.
  • When in balance, it is responsible for creativity and vitality, because it is what allows the free flow of consciousness or the creative life force (prana).
  • When it is out of balance, it can produce fear and anxiety (mind) or issues with seasonal allergies (in dry, hot weather), achy back, or problems with digestion like constipation (body).

Pitta Dosha:

  • Composed mostly of fire element with some water element.
  • Qualities are hot, moist, slightly oily, acidic, tense, sharp and light.
  • This dosha the fire for transformation and motivation to evolve and learn our life lessons.
  • When in balance there is sharp intellect and drive for success.
  • When out of balance it can lead to impatience and anger (mind) or issues with inflammation, irritable bowel syndrome, or food allergies.

Kapha Dosha

  • Composed of the elements earth and water.
  • Governs qualities like sluggish, slow, oily, smooth.
  • Provides stability to all of our bodily processes.
  • When in balance it can lead to a sweet and forgiving nature.
  • When out of balance it can lead to laziness or insecurities (mind) or chronic sinus congestion (body) and other flu-like symptoms.

Spirit-in-Nature essences were inspired by the great Indian master, Paramhansa Yogananda, who explained that pure food has sattwic, or elevating energy. They create a vibrational resonance.

Flower essences work on emotional, mental, psychological, and spiritual levels. The flower is the most vibrationally potent part of the plant; it’s the reproductive system, which contains 90% of the plant’s life force. The blossom is also the most magnetic, beautiful, and healing aspect of the plant.
